What is a "write off" and how does it work?

When you add a credit to a patient’s chart (do so from the patient’s billing page > cog menu > Add Credit), you’ll have the option to mark the entry as a write off. In practical terms, the effect will be the same as a credit. However it’s a different perspective financially; a credit is more like a discount or promotion you’re giving to a customer, while the write off is a cancellation of a charge. A lot of clinics opt for a write off if they’ve struggled to obtain payment from a patient, and are now giving up the pursuit, for example.
